TEATUNE | Knowing Tea Series
At TEATUNE, every cup of black tea carries a bold voice — rich, warming, and reassuring — yet its work within the body is subtle and profound.
Why Black Tea?
Black tea is the steady bassline in the symphony of tea — strong, dependable, and quietly nourishing.
But its benefits go far beyond a morning pick-me-up. With every sip, we’re inviting in nature’s supportive compounds — ones that help fuel our heart, calm our mind, and balance our gut. Let’s trace its beautiful journey inside us.
What’s Inside a Cup of Black Tea?
Each ingredient plays a role in Our Body’s rhythm:
- Theaflavins & Thearubigins
Antioxidants formed during oxidation (the process that gives black tea its colour). These warriors help neutralise free radicals, support blood vessel health, and promote cellular repair. - Caffeine (40–50 mg/cup)
Provides a smooth, sustained energy boost — especially effective when paired with L-theanine, avoiding the typical “crash.” - L-Theanine
Soothes the mind while enhancing focus — a rare combination that helps us feel calm and alert at once. - Polyphenols
Unlike in green tea, polyphenols from black tea travel deeper, reaching the colon where they feed friendly gut flora, produce short-chain fatty acids, and support metabolism and immunity.
The Journey: How Black Tea Flows Through Our Body
| Time | Where | What’s Happening |
| 0–5 sec | Mouth | Theaflavins awaken our taste buds. Tannins add a pleasant dryness. |
| 5–10 sec | Oesophagus | Polyphenols gently coat the lining — soothing when tea is under 60°C. |
| 10 sec–30 min | Stomach | ~20% of caffeine absorbed. Antioxidants begin their cellular protection. |
| 30 min–2 hrs | Small Intestine | ~90% of caffeine absorbed. L-theanine crosses into the brain to calm and focus. |
| 1–3 hrs | Liver | Caffeine is metabolised. Detox enzymes awaken, triggered by polyphenols. |
| 1–6 hrs | Bloodstream | Theaflavins support heart health and reduce oxidative stress. |
| 3–6 hrs | Kidneys | A mild diuretic effect kicks in — balancing fluids and sodium. |
| 6–24 hrs | Colon | Remaining polyphenols feed our gut flora and help regulate bad microbes. |
Feel the Flow: What We Might Notice
After 30 minutes: A light, clear focus emerges
After 1 hour: Antioxidants are peaking in our bloodstream, protecting our cells
After 3 hours: Our cardiovascular support is at its most active
After 6 hours: Caffeine is mostly metabolised — leaving us steady and balanced
